The 2nd WUMF World Karate Championships, held from September 20-22, 2024, in Crawley, UK, at the K2 Sports Hall, were a tremendous success for the athletes of our club, Sport Karate Coalition. Our competitors won a total of 68 medals – 23 gold, 20 silver, and 25 bronze – an outstanding result to kick off the season after the summer break. We competed in both individual (kata and kumite) and team events (kata and kumite), with our performance confirming our high level of readiness.
The first day of the competition (Saturday) was dedicated to the kata events, both individual and team. During the opening ceremony, I had the honour of receiving an award for my coaching contributions, which was a great personal recognition. The second day of the championships featured the individual kumite events as well as team kumite.
The location of the event was ideal, as the K2 Sports Hall in Crawley was just an hour’s drive from our place of residence, making logistics much easier. Considering that September marked the beginning of the season after the summer break, winning 68 medals at this point is a truly impressive achievement. It speaks volumes about the hard work and dedication of our athletes in preparing for these Championships.
It is also important to note that, in addition to the athletes, the parents played a vital role in supporting us as assistant coaches and photographers. Their involvement was crucial not only for the organization but also in creating a fantastic atmosphere throughout the event. These kinds of experiences continuously raise the competitive level of our club as we compete with top athletes from around the world.
On a personal note, I also had the opportunity to engage in conversations with many other coaches, exchanging valuable insights and experiences. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Elango Mark, the president of the WUMF organization, and Bill Hair, who was responsible for overseeing the judges. Their commitment and professionalism contributed greatly to the flawless organization of the Championships.
Next year, we plan to return to the same venue, even more motivated to improve and solidify our place among the world’s elite in karate.
